Half a dozen sticks of dynamite have been discovered on a beach at Lake Roxburgh.

Alexandra police sergeant Adam Elder said the explosives were discovered washed up on Lake Roxburgh's Mckenzies Beach last night.

A scene guard is at currently at the site of the discovery and a bomb squad has been deployed from Christchurch to ensure "the dynamite are disposed of safely."

"Police responded immediately and notified the bomb squad as part of the procedures to ensure the safety of the community," Sgt Elder said.

"It didn't appear to be anything sinister but someone who tried to dispose of them in an inappropriate manner," he said.

The bomb squad arrived at the scene about 2.20pm and the explosives were safely detonated about 25 minutes after that.

A member of the public made the discovery at about 7.30pm last night, a police spokeswoman confirmed.
