Elderly man dies in Clydevale collision

An elderly Central Otago man is dead after a two-car collision at the main intersection at Clydevale last night.

Clutha police sub area controller Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore said the man was driving his Commodore saloon along the Clutha Valley Rd towards Tuapeka when he struck a Mitsubishi double-cab flat-deck ute, coming from the Greenfield Rd direction, at the intersection next to the Clutha Valley Primary School about 5.30pm.

The man, the sole occupant of his vehicle, died at the scene.

The driver and sole occupant of the utility, a 43-year-old Tuapeka woman, was taken by ambulance to Clutha Health First.

Her injuries were not life-threatening, Snr Sgt Whitmore said.

The road was wet and greasy from steady rain.

Police were diverting traffic around the crash scene while investigators conducted an examination.

The road was expected to fully reopened late last night but police were guarding the scene overnight and their investigations will continue today.

Fire appliances from Clutha Valley and Balclutha attended, as did police staff from Invercargill, Balclutha and Milton.
