The proposed track, which would follow the coast from the old gun emplacement at Cape Wanbrow to Bushy Beach, was brought up at the council’s assets committee meeting on June 15.
Recreation manager Erik van der Spek said the project had been "on the radar for quite a number of years", but was still in the conceptual stage, as the council explored options with the landowners.
Officers had met landowners and, in principle, they were agreeable to the idea, but they wanted to develop the land and had expectations of council in that regard. A cost summary was being prepared.
Mr van der Spek said $83,000 had been allocated for the project in this year’s budget, and $100,000 in the 2021-32 long-term plan, set down to be adopted by the council today.
"We’re having conversations with the landowners to explore what our options are," he said.
"This is a near future desire of council and we’re having those conversations over options of how we could work together on it."
