Two defended charges were dealt with by Judge David Saunders in the Oamaru District Court yesterday.
Wenhua Lin (40), draughtsman, of Christchurch, denied a charge of dangerous driving on State Highway 1 between Palmerston and Herbert on January 5 when he was travelling from Dunedin to Christchurch.
After hearing evidence, Judge Saunders said Lin's standard of driving fell well below that of any prudent motorist and was dangerous.
Lin was convicted, fined $800, court costs $130, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay $50 witness' expenses.
Police stopped Lin at Herbert after receiving a complaint about his driving, including overtaking a car on no-passing lines just north of Palmerston and narrowly missing a bridge.
He was followed by a patrol car from the Waianakarua Rd intersection.
Just south of Palmerston, he was seen by police to swerve, at one stage crossing the centre line and causing an oncoming vehicle to take evasive action.
Lin denied passing a car just north of Palmerston, and said he could not recall weaving across the road, crossing the centre line or no-passing lines or almost hitting a bridge.
Christopher Ronald Charles Hazelwood (40), beneficiary, of Hampden, denied operating a motor vehicle in an unnecessary exhibition of speed or acceleration at Hampden on November 19.
The charge was amended to careless driving, which he admitted.
He was convicted, and fined $350, court costs $130.
