Dangerous driving charges, and a missing digger

A 71-year-old man faces a slew of charges after his dangerous driving resulted in numerous calls to police.

The Dunedin man was arrested by police about 7pm on Sunday as he attempted to leave a licensed premises in Oamaru.

A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered drugs and a weapon.

He was charged with possession of cannabis, possession of a knife, obstructing police and refusing an officer’s request for blood, and will appear in the Oamaru District Court on December 4.

Earlier, police received six complaints from members of the public about the nature of the man’s driving in the streets of Oamaru.

He was allegedly seen overtaking in a dangerous manner, and had ‘‘multiple close calls’’ with oncoming vehicles, Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said.

  • Police are investigating after a trailer with a Kubota digger on it was allegedly taken from a Chelmer St address on Saturday morning. The orange digger was labelled as being the property of Stephen Murdoch Hire. Inquiries are continuing.
  • A 20-year-old Oamaru was arrested and charged with wilful damage and shoplifting after an incident in Oamaru about 8pm on Friday. He is scheduled to appear in the Oamaru District Court on December 4.
