Alexandra friends (from left) Joshua Brown (9), Harry Ryan (10) and Nicholas McIntosh (10) have fun at the Rainbow Run in Alexandra on Saturday. About 430 people from around Central Otago took part in the second annual Alexandra run.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher battles Waitaki District Council Youth Council members (from left) Oamaru’s Alex Gibbons (16), Anna Craig (17), Joel Pickles (17), and Lily Stock (16) at a dye station in Saturday’s 2017 Rainbow Confectionery Rainbow Run at the Oamaru Racecourse.

Sport Waitaki co-ordinator Rhiannon McLean said the race was a fundraiser for charity Sporting Chance, which gave money to "kids for sports gear where finances are a barrier to them participating in sport".

The colour run was based loosely on the religious festival Holi held in India and Nepal.

"So we’ve taken that concept and brought it here to Oamaru with the rainbow run. There’s colour runs all over the place but this is specifically the Rainbow Run. It’s a Sport Otago event that happens in Oamaru, Dunedin, Balclutha and Alexandra."
