Intersection accidents mostly attributed to alcohol

There will be no roading upgrade for a crash-troubled intersection in Oamaru in the foreseeable future, the Waitaki District Council says.

Recently, a car smashed through a fence near the intersection of Orwell and Humber Sts intersection after colliding with a parked station wagon.

The driver was arrested and charged with drink-driving and careless driving.

The council roading manager Michael Voss said that the crash was the seventh at the intersection since 2002.

''Of the seven crashes, six involved alcohol.''

The intersection had a higher than average crash rate for those under the council's control, but was ''appropriately'' signposted and no crashes had been attributed solely to speed for many years. That indicated the signage was appropriate, he said.

Alcohol involvement meant the crash rate was weighted towards driver responsibility, not road design, he said.

''We'll monitor it but there are no engineering solutions for that sort of crash.''
