The club are one of two sides to earn promotion to the North Otago Premier A grade as the competition reached the halfway mark last weekend.
Six wins from their seven games in premier B had Old Boys in second place on the table and earned them a shot at promotion.
Twizel would go on to default that playoff game, allowing them to move up.
Old Boys spent the second half of last season in the top grade and co-captain Katiana Taiti is looking forward to the challenge.
"We’re stoked to be be back in this position and are hoping to have a better run this year," she said.
"It is definitely a big leap and I feel like there could almost be a grade in between sometimes, it feels like that big of a gap.
"We’ve got a lot of new, young players in our team this year and so we’re just excited for those players to have the challenge of playing against stronger teams and stronger players and just building their confidence and their game."
She credited the early season success to "the connections in the team".
Player-coach Katherine Tongotongo Eke has been hard at work with the team at training to get them ready for the step up, Taiti said.
"We train twice a week, just looking and what gaps we have and trying to build on those and strengthen those gaps."
In the other promotion match, Waitaki Girls’ High School Lightning Strike beat Valley Kaha 51-31 to move up as well.
Strong performances in the first and fourth quarters powered them to victory.
They were unbeaten in the premier B grade and are the second Waitaki Girls’ team in the premier A grade, joining Wildfire.
Both Twizel and Valley Kaha had lost earlier in the day to St Kevin’s College and Maheno, respectively.
Waitaki Girls’ other side, Wildfire, beat Athletic 45-42 in the a cracking game.
Down by five points heading into the fourth quarter, the high school side rallied to come from behind and snatch an impressive win.
Valley Manawa emerged victorious in a rematch of the 2025 final against club rivals Valley Ahi.
The 62-56 win meant they finished the first round of games in third place.
The back half of the season begins this weekend and there are another seven rounds to be played before the semifinals at the end of August.
Tomorrow, Old Boys and Waitaki Girls’ Lightning Strike face tough first-up tests in the top grade as they take on Maheno and St Kevin’s, respectively.
Athletic and Valley Ahi are both looking to bounce back from losses last weekend as they go head to head, while Valley Manawa play Waitaki Girls’ Wildfire.
