A police spokeswoman said they were called to a crash involving two cars, about 6.15pm.
It happened at the intersection of Lune St and Wansbeck St, in South Hill.
"Initially there were people trapped in both vehicles," she said.
Police were still at the scene around 7.40pm and injuries were unknown at that stage.
