The group of young people are "eager" to gather opinions and ideas on how the area, and in particular its main street, might develop in the future, Progress of the Waikouaiti Area (Powa) wrote in May’s Powa Community News.
A Powa community hui will take place from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, May 24 at the East Otago Events Centre.
Students will present their findings and hear suggestions and feedback at the hui.
The second and third-year students from the bachelor of architecture programme at Otago Polytechnic made their first visit to the area in late March, alongside lecturer Campbell McNeill, meeting Powa to discuss the "interesting" project.
"The students remarked that they often did ‘conceptual stuff’ but this real-life project involving many dimensions was an interesting challenge."
As part of the project, students would look at how Waikouaiti, Karitane, Palmerston, Hawksbury, Warrington and Waitati related to each other, Powa said.
And they would learn about Waikouaiti’s history, culture, landscape, geology and topography.
Powa chairwoman Kath Ryan has described the development plan as an "exciting" project.
