The truck was travelling near Herbert when the fire ignited, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.
Crews from Kakanui, Oamaru and Weston responded.
Kakanui was first to arrive, and extinguished the fire quickly, the spokesman said.
Oamaru and Weston arrived to assist with dampening down any hotspots.
The road was closed for about an hour, and has since reopened.
