Attempted murder charge after Wanaka assault

Two men arrested following a serious assault in Wanaka are now facing charges of attempted murder.

Kahu Vincent, who is in his late 20s, remains in a critical condition in Dunedin Hospital after being assaulted at the  Ardmore St Night and Day store about 3.15am on May 9.

The fresh charges follow further investigation by police and forensic scientists and were laid in the Invercargill District Court this morning.

The accused, aged 34 and 39, have name suppression.

One man, originally charged with causing grievous bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice, now faces additional charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, stealing food from the store and a second charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The second man, originally charged with one count of causing grievous bodily harm, now also faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and two of stealing food from the store.

The men were remanded to appear at the High Court in Invercargill on June 9 for a video link with a High Court judge in Christchurch.

Police said they would like to thank the Wanaka community for the support received in the inquiry, but would still like to hear from anyone who has information.
