A night to showcase and inspire. The Invercargill CBD is set to come alive today with a treasure hunt of art performances, exhibitions and other activities.

From live painting to light installations and musical performances, the community will be encouraged to walk around the inner city to discover, have fun and be part of "Night of the Arts".

Arts Murihiku chairwoman Rebecca Amundsen said the idea came from another similar event during the Southland Festival of Arts years ago.

It was such a success, they decided to bring it back.

"I think the best way to describe it is that it’s a late afternoon and night-time event where people who come into the CBD will find interesting and fun things in unexpected places.

"So there will be lots of interesting things to see, to look at and to participate in."

She said the interactive art experiences, live performances and installations would cater to all ages.

The Invercargill City Library, Miharo and He Waka Tuia would be open with family-friendly activities also, she said.

Arts Murihiku activator Sylvie Boutelje-Chasteau said they invited all arts groups and artsy people throughout the region to take part.

"So there’s going to be some live painting, there’s going to be performances, community groups, choirs, musicians and we’ve got a couple of different people who are working with light projections.

"So people will be able to see things that are quite unique."

Among the attractions were Dunedin artist Sam Caldwell and his project "Liquid Light", Invercargill street artist Deow and Queenstown’s band EchoKnot, who will be performing along with their art projections at Tuatara cafe and bar.

The event starts at 3pm. The full schedule can be found on the Arts Murihiku website.
