A mini-skip truck shunted a 2020 Kia Sportage SUV up to its windscreen underneath the rear-mounted hydraulic platform of an LPG bottle delivery truck.
A St John spokesman said one ambulance responded to the scene, where staff treated and transported the SUV driver to Southland Hospital in a moderate condition.
Both truck drivers were unharmed.
While the two trucks received minimal damage, the SUV received extensive damage to the vehicle’s front end and its airbags had deployed.
An underrun protection device was fitted to the LPG bottle delivery truck.
A Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency spokesman said there was no requirement for some trucks to have rear underrun protection devices fitted to the vehicle.
Rockgas operations manager Rodney Proffit said the hoist position, while in transit, was under review.
"The safety of the public and our drivers is our priority and we will always review all elements of an incident and make any adjustments as necessary," he said.
