"Retired" from travelling around the country two years ago, the 16-year-old merino wether has recently begun a promotional tour for a new book.
Owner and author John Perriam, of Bendigo Station, said he and Shrek would visit well-known people and places around New Zealand before the book he is writing is launched, probably in November.
Mr Perriam said the book would be "the first in-depth, behind the scenes look at Shrek's life".
Any royalties would go to the charity Cure Kids.
Yesterday, Shrek visited Auckland, taking in Eden Park and the waterfront.
Mr Perriam said although Shrek was one of the oldest sheep in the country, he did not expect the travel to adversely affect him.
"He might be the elder statesman but he is still as healthy as a buck rat."Shrek will travel on scheduled airlines, by helicopter and 4WD.
Mr Perriam and Shrek will be in Queenstown later this week for the Cure Kids event Ticket for Hope.
He said Tourism New Zealand would use the book and the tour to market New Zealand to people coming here for the Rugby World Cup next year.
