Fire crews with water tankers scrambled from surrounding areas to help douse a barn blaze in rural Southland.

When crews arrived the barn was well alight and fire was starting to spread to a nearby hedge, a Fenz spokesman said,

After the alarm was raised about the Waimatuku fire at 11.30am, responding trucks came from Thornbury and Riverton with tankers from Wallacetown and Otautau.

Another fire truck was called in from Wallacetown and a tanker from Invercargill.

Crews were still at the scene dampening the fire early this afternoon.

The status of the barn was unknown at this stage.
