Ajax claimed a big win over Varsity in Dunedin women's club basketball on Tuesday night.

It made a big statement with a 101-36 scoreline, including a 56-13 second half.

Otago Gold Rush captain Natalie Smith led the way in scoring, with 30 points. Nicole Ruske had 27, Danielle Frost chipped in with 16 and Olivia O'Neill had 12.

Varsity fell behind in the first quarter and although the game was slipping away, it remained in touch at 25-14.

Erica Blundell scored its first nine points to help it stay within a run of closing in on Ajax.

It could not keep that though, Frost scoring 10 points and Smith eight to help Ajax to a 45-23 lead at the end of the second quarter.

That continued in the third, as the St Hilda's Collegiate duo of Ruske and O'Neill came to the fore to extend the lead to 67-31.

With the result beyond doubt, the score blew out in the final quarter, Varsity being held to five points and Ajax piling on 34.

Blundell's nine points led Varsity's scoring, while Jeanie Pattison had eight.

The win sendss Ajax to the top of the table, after the South Pacific Magic defaulted to the Andy Bay Falcons.

Next week is the last round before a two-week break in the competition. It will then return for four weeks, before playoffs begin in August.
