Cricket: NZC upbeat about Molyneux

Domestic cricket could return to Molyneux Park as early as next season, New Zealand Cricket grounds and facilities manager Ian McKendry says.

Last month, NZC withdrew the venue's warrant of fitness and transferred Otago's twenty/20 game against Northern Districts on December 29 to the University Oval.

McKendry said the decision was not made lightly but the national body became concerned when the venue had not been able to find a timely replacement for former groundsman Wayne Walker.

Andrew Douglas was appointed to the role the week NZC withdrew the venue's warrant, but McKendry said his appointment had come too late in the process. However, the venue might not be in the wilderness for too long.

"As long as everything goes well with the preparation of club and district pitches for the rest of the season, Molyneux Park will be on the radar again for the allocation of [elite] cricket next season," McKendry said.

"Our only issue was that they did not have a turf manager there. We could have pulled in someone from around the country and looked at other alternatives, but the ground has to learn to stand on its own two feet.

"There have been standards set across New Zealand, and if it was any other ground in the country we would have gone through the same process and came up with the same result.""But we are totally supportive of Molyneux Park and the new turf manager, and will make sure that all support systems are in place to ensure Molyneux Park continues to play an important role in the future of New Zealand cricket."

To that end, McKendry plans to meet up with Douglas before the end of the year and hopes the pair can travel through to Queenstown to see experienced groundsman Peter Domigan.

"Once he [Douglas] is happy and confident and up to speed in terms of preparing cricket pitches, elite cricket will be able to be reallocated to Molyneux Park."

Domestic cricket has been played at the venue since December 1980. In the halcyon days, during the mid to late 1980s, games could attract crowds of up to 3000. Molyneux Park lost its warrant of fitness following poor pitch reports during the 2008-09 season but returned to the domestic roster last season.
