A roundup of Dunedin club cricket matches played over the weekend

Green Island 181 lost to NEV 127/3 (DLS method)

Jeremy Smith and Gus Holt teamed up to take seven Green Island wickets and set up a win for North East Valley at Sunnyvale on Saturday.

Smith claimed four for 26 and Holt took three for 27 from 10 tight overs.

Mayank Malhotra (30) and Elliot Santner (39) had put on 52 for the second wicket.

But Green Island’s middle order melted away before Regan Cairns (33) and Hamish Wilson (24) added a valuable stand of 51 for the eighth wicket to get the Swamprats through to 181.

Rain interrupted Valley’s chase, but the Swans were seemingly in control.

Hunter Kindley was undefeated on 51, and he had combined in an 84-run stand with Sebastian Lauderdale-Smith (49) for the second wicket.

A stumping from Brad Kneebone broke the partnership, and Wilson removed Will Hamilton caught and bowled for a duck.

Wilson had picked up the wicket of opener Shaedon Miller (16) in a similar fashion.

But Valley had got ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculation when the rain came and took the win.

University-Grange 141 lost to CDK 142/2

Otago and CDK left-armer Thomas O’Connor played a big role in the eight-wicket win against the struggling University-Grange at Tonga Park.

The 21-year-old rolled both openers cheaply and returned to pick up one of the tailenders.

He claimed three for 26 and fellow opening bowler Harry Sixton was impressive as well. He took three for 25.

Thomas’ younger brother, Jack, also grabbed a wicket (one for 10) to help dismiss University for 141.

Their father is former New Zealand left-arm bowler Shayne O’Connor, who took 53 test wickets.

It was Thomas’ effort with the bat that caught the eye.

He thumped five sixes and eight fours during his undefeated knock of 76.

Thomas played for the New Zealand XI against the touring West Indies earlier in the week and got sawn off by a terrible lbw call when he was on 35.

Albion 246/9 beat Taieri 129/6 (DLS method)

Albion bounced back from their first loss of the season to record an impressive win against Taieri at Brooklands Park.

Openers Dylan Fletcher and Quinn Sunde put on 105 for the first wicket to help the side reach 246 for nine.

Fletcher was undone for a brisk 44, but Sunde, who has played 11 first-class matches and one list A game for Auckland, continued on, adding 74 from 86 balls.

Taylor Cumberland made 47, and Patrick Arnold (24) and Ollie Ritchie (18) chipped in further down the order.

Toby Hart was the best of the Taieri bowlers. He took three for 38.

Zac Cumming whacked 50 from 61 balls, but Taieri were 129 for six when the rain came down and behind on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculation.

Albion got the win.
