Surf life-saving: Otago juniors find success in both surf and pool

The St Clair junior surf life-saving club won the Southern Region junior championships, at New Brighton over the weekend.

The St Clair club dominated right through the grades, which went from under-8 to under-14.

The Dunedin club racked up a total of 197.5 points over the two-day carnival to finish well clear of the Waimairi club, which scored 114 points.

Sumner finished third with 94 points.

The St Clair club is sending a large team to the junior national championships in Papamoa early next month.

Oamaru swimmers were to the fore of the Otago competitors at the national junior swimming championships, in Auckland over the weekend.

Oamaru's Iessha Mansfield (12) won three gold medals, in the 50m freestyle, the 200m freestyle and the 100m freestyle, in the 12-year-old age group.

Madison Wills (11), of the Kiwi Club in Dunedin, won gold in the 200m breaststroke.

She also won a bronze in the 100m breaststroke, competing in the 11-year-old age group.

Penny Keeling (12), of Oamaru, picked up a bronze in the 12 and under 400m freestyle and a silver in the 12-and-under 400m individual medley.

Elonoa Asi (10), of Oamaru , won a silver in the 10-and-under 100m breaststroke and a bronze in the 200m breaststroke.

Samuel Petrie (10), of Oamaru, won a silver in the 10-year-old 200m freestyle while Alice Petrie (12) won a bronze medal in the 12-year-old 200m butterfly.
