Otago Paralympian Holly Robinson will lead the New Zealand team into the Maracana Stadium this morning, signalling the beginning of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

The 21-year-old is one of New Zealand's brightest medal hopes and will carry the flag.

She is the No1 women's javelin F46 thrower in the world and just tops with the children at the Athletics Taieri, where Robinson has spent so many of her Tuesday evenings.

The inspirational Hokitika native shifted to Dunedin in 2011 to foster her athletic ability. She has been coaching the 5-14 year-olds at the club for the past three years and they are some of her biggest fans.

''She helps inspire me mainly because she has such a good attitude and helps everyone here at Taieri,'' said promising hurdler Tara McNally.

''Her advice is just to always try your hardest because that is what she does.

''I'm really proud of her. It is a good achievement for her.''

Athletics Taieri junior convener Angie Beattie said Robinson, who had her left arm amputated just below the elbow at birth, always seems to find the time for others.

''She gives back as much as she puts in,'' Beattie said.

''The children all love her.''

Despite a hectic schedule while preparing for Rio, Robinson spent six weeks coaching and supporting the Otago team which competed in the Halberg Junior Disability Games in April. She even travelled to Cambridge to manage the team.

New Zealand Chef de Mission Ben Lucas said Robinson ''is a truly inspirational role model''.

''Not only does she give it everything she has on the field, but she goes above and beyond in her local community as well,'' Lucas said.

''As an ambassador for Para-Sport, she is simply outstanding. Add to that, all going well, Holly is on track to be one of New Zealand's stand-out performers.''

Robinson said she was ''privileged and humbled'' to be named as the flag bearer.

''I am so excited to lead the team and to know that all our supporters, especially my family, are watching us will make the honour extraordinarily special.''
