Bigger competition expected

Organisers expect the Oamaru punter of the year competition will be bigger and better this year.

The competition, held each year on Oamaru Cup day in July, attracted ''12 to 15'' teams last year, Gallop South chief executive Malcolm Little said.

''We're hoping to get nearer 20 this year. There's been some good interest,'' Little said.

The venue for the competition has been moved to the president/sponsors' room to the south of the members' grandstand.

The president's room will be based in the small building on the northeast corner of the birdcage usually occupied by the Trackside studio.

Teams are restricted to a maximum of five members, and each team will start with a pool of $400.

However, if the day is going badly, they can replenish their pool with a $50 bonus draw after each race.

''That was new last year. It went well so we're going to continue with that.''

The winning team will collect a prize of $2000, provided there are at least 10 teams entered.

The prize will drop to $1000 if there are fewer than 10 teams.

Teams can register by contacting Gallop South.

The Oamaru Jockey Club has also added a $10 gate charge for Sunday's meeting, as part of the club's flagship day for the year.

''With that $10 entry, they'll get a free racebook, free kids' entertainment and everybody through the gate will get a lucky ticket.''

Little said draws would be held after each race for meal vouchers, wine and other prizes.
