Racing: Directive to starters

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has issued a directive that starters must be positioned in front of the gates when starting races from overhead barriers.

The directive was issued in the wake of barrier attendant Aaron Taylor being struck by a horse in front of the gates at Riccarton on Saturday as the horses were released.

Taylor was bruised. He was crouched down under the front of the gates and had started to move to his right as the gates opened.

Tracks which have overhead barriers are: Ellerslie, Trentham, Waterlea and Riccarton.

"We are not only reinforcing with all starters their obligations under NZTR's starter's manual issued last year but also our directive that starters must have a clear view of the track in front of the barriers every time they start a race," Cameron George, chief stipendiary steward for NZTR, said.

"With overhead barriers, a starter's vision can be impaired. The majority of our barriers are open-top."

An inquiry into the Riccarton incident will be held by NZTR today.

Wealth Princess, who is headed for a Queensland campaign, won a barrier trial at Waipa on Tuesday.

She ran the 1000m in 59.88 and won by a length and a-half. She had been given a six-week spell to freshen.

She will be in the care of trainer Brent Gillovic and ridden in her Queensland races by Michael Walker, who was aboard on Tuesday.

Her Australian owner, Sean Buckley, will then switch her to the Lee Freedman stable.

Buckley purchased Wealth Princess from her Hong Kong breeder, Victor Ngai, after her last start when second to Tavistock in the Waikato Sprint on February 13.

Wealth Princess, who has won five of her seven starts, has the $A1 million Stradbroke Handicap on June 12 as her target.

The 4yr-old is to be flown to Brisbane next Wednesday for a race at Caloundra on Sunday week.

Wealth Princess, who has an aversion to wet tracks, has the $A150,000 Glenlogan Stakes at Doomben on May 22 as a final lead-up to the Stradbroke.

The John Wheeler-trained Juice, winner of the group one $200,000 New Zealand Breeders' Stakes at Te Aroha on April 10, has been sidelined with a tendon strain in a foreleg.

The injury surfaced after she was unplaced in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie on April 17.

Borninthestates, who has not raced for 10 months due to a tendon injury, resumes racing at Waterlea today.

The 7yr-old, winner of 13 races, was unplaced at his last start in the Ipswich Cup in June last year.
