A long injury lay-off has not dulled Latheronwheel's talent judging by his win at Forbury Park last night.

The 5yr-old gelding injured a hind suspensory ligament after racing at Wyndham and Oamaru in November 2011, and his trainer, Nathan Williamson, is pleased to have the progressive trotter back in his ranks - even if his first start back at Addington last Friday did not quite go to plan when he finished last in a 10-horse field.

''He was fresh-up last week - no workouts, no trials - and he choked down,'' Williamson said.

''So we were expecting better things tonight if he relaxed, and he did.''

The Continentalman half-brother of The Fiery Ginga was good enough to run fourth in feature 2yr-old trots, and he showed no major effects of the long time off as junior driver Rory McIlwrick rated him well at the front of the field.

''He'll race on. He'll go to Oamaru next week,'' Williamson said.

Whozideawasthis finding feet
It is a long way from Gloucester Park in Perth to Forbury Park and, while the stake money between the West Australian Derby and a maiden pace in Dunedin is markedly different, Keith Ovens was grinning regardless.

Ovens went to Perth last month to watch pacer Alta Christiano - in whom he still has a share - win the Derby in style.

But while Alta Christiano's 2yr-old season ended on a tough note when he broke gear in the 2012 sires' stakes final, the Paul Kerr-trained Whozideawasthis is finding his feet after a slow start to his career.

''It's just an education thing,'' Ovens said.

''He's a very good horse, but he tried to race [star 2yr-old Allblack Stride] out last start, and they took a hold of him, and he just broke.

''He's got heaps of ability, but that's why we brought him here. It was a trip away, some education and he'll be a lot better this year.

Ovens was joined on the track after Whozideawasthis won by members of the First Time Owners syndicate, which has a share in Miss Ali Mach, also trained by Kerr. The syndicate is made up of the children of many of the owners in Whozideawasthis and Alta Christiano.

''We gave them a share in that horse. It will win a few races, but that's what racing is all about.

''This is my home town and I want to support racing down here.''

Alta Christiano has three more starts in his 3yr-old preparation before he is spelled to prepare for the Golden Nuggets and McInerney Classic.

Westwood Beach trainer Graeme Anderson claimed Montecrengle for $10,000 after the Christian Cullen gelding's win in the claimers' pace.
