Oamaru trainer Phil Williamson hopes two fourth placings on Tuesday could turn into one group 1 win at Addington today.
Williamson will line up Springbank Sam and Jag's Invasion in today's $200,000 Dominion Trot, after the pair ran on Tuesday, finishing fourth behind King Of Strathfield and Peak respectively.
''They're both there with a runner's chance. I think they should both be sharper tomorrow,'' he said.
Williamson watched Jag's Invasion hit the line in the trotting free-for-all on Tuesday, but thought he could have finished closer.
''He was only OK. He had his chance to win that race. While we were pleased with his fourth, he wasn't looking like he was unlucky.
''They were both about the same - had their chance but went good races.''
Both trotters are at long odds in the market - a far cry from 2009 when Williamson won the Dominion with Springbank Richard, who was favourite. Williamson was impressed by Peak's brave victory on Tuesday.
''He was good enough to beat us, and beat everybody. They all had their chance to shoot him down, and they couldn't do it. He could be a pretty fine horse.''
The capacity field is a mixture of old campaigners such as Stig and Dr Hook, and the young contenders including Master Lavros and Stent.
''I think it's an even field where every horse has a show. I wouldn't rule anyone out.''
Standing-start manners will be vital, and Williamson is confident his two trotters will be on their best behaviour. Williamson has five other runners on the day, and rates Yankee One (race 8) as his best chance.
Suave Stuey Lombo was the big winner when the barrier draw was made for the $200,000 New Zealand Free-For-All.
The awkward mile start point on the home bend at Addington means the inside draws are a bonus, and the New South Wales pacer, who missed away from the standing start in the New Zealand Cup, should be in the lead or the trail by the time the field passes the winning post for the first time.
Christen Me drew on the inside of the second line, and could find himself trapped on the fence if Sleepy Tripp, who drew barrier 1, does not fly from the gate.
