But funnily enough, that is one of the problems with Motorboat Mike.
The Perfectly Ready gelding has been a model of consistency throughout his career, picking up 11 top-four finishes in his career prior to yesterday's victory at Omakau - his second in 21 starts.
His trainer, Sophie Price, of Winton, said the 5yr-old had presented her with some challenges.
'''We have a few issues with him,'' she said.
''He doesn't like getting hit with the whip, so he goes by a few voice commands.''
Jockeys have to shout at Motorboat Mike to get him to try his best, she said.
The 20-strong Colin's Crew syndicate is based at Winton.
''They'll be cheering and I'd say there will be a few shouts there tonight.''
Motorboat Mike's name came as a result of Mike Tindall's exploits in a Queenstown bar during the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Hell Raiser is living up to her name prior to her races, and her Wingatui trainer, Steven Prince, is waiting for the day when it all comes undone.
''She is a bit of a handful. The day is going to come when she won't go in to the barrier,'' Prince said.
''That's why she goes around [to the starting gates] early. But she has a ton of ability.
The track, which was downgraded from dead5 to slow7 after the first race, largely due to some soft patches in the straight, was not expected to suit the Any Suggestion filly.
''I didn't think she would have handled it,'' Prince said.
''The trials she had before she went to the races, she won't have a bar of it, so that was a worry.''
Prince is likely to aim the 3yr-old at a rating 65 1200m at Wingatui on February 1.
''The boys are keen on the Gore Guineas but the 1355m would worry me.''
Nancho Lass enjoyed the step up to 2000m, grinding out her her first win at her 12th attempt. The 5yr-old mare had been trained at Wingatui by Alex Freeman, who returned to Ballarat in Victoria in mid-December.
Fellow Wingatui trainer Paul Richards has been looking after the horse for the last three weeks.
Brian and Shane Anderton gave Wingatui trainers a clean sweep of the first three races thanks to Ruby's Rose following on from Nancho Lass and Hell Raiser.
The daughter of Gallant Guru impressed in a 800m jumpout in late October, posting a time of 45.95 seconds.''
She had that scintillating trial then I backed off her a wee bit,'' Brian Anderton said.
The Andertons opted to put the blinkers on the mare after sub-par runs at Cromwell and Wingatui last month.
''The blinkers made the difference.''
The Andertons wrapped the day up for the Wingatui trainers with Gold Leaf's success in the final race, the rating 75 2000m. Gold Leaf is also by Gallant Guru.
