New Years Jay showed no ill effects from a bowed tendon as she burnt up the track at the Forbury Park trials yesterday.

A race winner at her only start in June 2012, the Washington VC mare lost the race for excessive galloping and has been sidelined with a tendon problem in one of her front legs since.

''The tendon seems fine now - there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it,'' co-trainer Amber Hoffman said.

The big daughter of Washington VC sprinted home in 58.5 seconds for the last 800m, which gained Hoffman's approval.

''She does it easy and she's only at 80%, so it'll be interesting to see how good she is when she's at 100%.

''She's quite big in condition so she'll definitely need another trial then we'll look for somewhere.''

Heavy weighting on Tachma's front shoes worked perfectly, as the 5yr-old mare qualified more than five seconds within the required time as a trotter yesterday.

Waikouaiti trainer Bruce Negus said the daughter of Peruvian Hanover carried 16oz (453g) of weight on each front hoof, with extra steel inside the horseshoe.

Tachma has won once from her 20 starts as a pacer, but Negus said she had shown a natural skill at the trotting gait.

''She's only been trotting for a fortnight.''

He was so pleased with Tachma's effort that he nominated her for the c0 trot at Forbury Park on Thursday night.

Maruia Parker took another step towards driving at a full race meeting when she completed her final five trials drives required to meet the criteria for a junior driver's licence at yesterday's trials meeting.

Parker (22), an ex-Dunstan High School pupil, has worked for Roxburgh trainers Geoff and Jude Knight for almost four years.

She reined home three winners yesterday, including two for her employers.

Her first winning drive was behind Wot Eva, who produced the fastest time of the day when winning the qualifying mobile pace in 2.49.7.

Co-trainer Geoff Knight said the Elsu gelding needed some more practice, but he would look to line her up at Forbury Park on July 17.
