Highview Tommy lowered the Forbury Park track record for 3200m by 2.4sec when he easily won the Tuapeka Cup in 4.03.2 yesterday.
Highview Tommy, who started from 20m, bettered the record set by Roman Gladiator in the 2007 Tuapeka Cup.
Blair Orange settled Highview Tommy mid-field, improved to outside the pacemaker Diomedes at the 1000m and the 4yr-old came clear in the run home, running the last 800m in 56. It was the 10th win in 30 starts for Highview Tommy, trained by Mark Purdon and Grant Payne for Hazel Opzeeland, Philip and Glenys Kennard, all of Christchurch.
Highview Tommy has amassed $445,680 in stakes.
The Purdon-Payne stable also won the heat of the Sires' Stakes for 3yr-old fillies yesterday with Meredith Maguire.
The win of Meredith Maguire made the trip to Dunedin worthwhile for her Palmerston North owners Braeden and Caroline Whitelock.
The Whitelocks travelled to Christchurch on Thursday and took in the rugby that day and a wedding in Dunedin on Saturday.
Mrs Whitelock is the daughter of Nelson Dalzell, who raced Diamond Moose, winner of the Dunedin Cup in 1986 when trained and driven by Robin Butt.
The Whitelocks, dairy farmers, have raced other horses including Braeside Star and Milly Me.
Braeside Star won six races when trained by Purdon.
She is now breeding for the Whitelocks.
Milly Me was sold to the United States after winning three races from the Tony Herlihy stable.
They bought Meredith Maguire for $32,000 at the Australasian Classic sale.
It was the third win in four starts for Meredith Maguire, who ran the 1700m (mobile) in 2.04.3, a 1.57.6 mile rate.
Her time was within 1.2sec of the track record set by Angela Jane in 2002.
Meredith Maguire, driven by co-trainer Mark Purdon, dashed three lengths clear after 300m and held on by half a length, sprinting her last 800m in 56.6.
Yankee Dream, the favourite, finished second after trailing Meredith Maguire.
She challenged on the outer at the 200m.
