Former Highlanders head coach Aaron Mauger is going back to the grassroots.

Mauger has been named as the Kaikorai club’s coaching adviser for next season.

The job will involve assisting with the coaching of coaches as well as supporting the player development programme.

Kaikorai chairman Des Smith said the role would involve only a limited amount of hours, although Mauger would be paid.

He said the club was excited to have Mauger as part of its rugby development programme, as he brought a wealth of experience and expertise to this role.

Mauger coached the Highlanders for three years, making the playoffs in the first two seasons.

The side won three of its eight games in the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition this year, not enough to keep Mauger in his job and he was moved on after his three-year contract came to an end at the conclusion of this season.

Mauger, who is married with four children, is staying in Dunedin. A 45 test All Black, he started his coaching career with the High School Old Boys club in Christchurch, which he also played for.

The adviser role at the club had previously been carried out by Otago coach Tom Donnelly and Otago assistant coach Ryan Martin.

Kaikorai had finished second after the round robin in this year’s premier club competition but was dumped out at the quarterfinal stage, losing to University.

Tony Brown is the new head coach of the Highlanders.
