Prop Craig Millar, who made his debut for Otago last winter, will have his first start for the Highlanders in Queenstown on Friday night.

Miller (23) is one of seven players who will play for the Highlanders for the first time against the Brumbies.

The others are Gareth Evans, Lee Allan, Tom Franklin, Richard Buckman, Winston Stanley and Patrick Osborne.

Millar is one of a growing number of former members of the Otago Boys' High School first XV who are now making their mark in the higher echelons of rugby.

He missed the 2012 first-class season because of reconstruction surgery on his shoulder.

The Pirates club loosehead prop graduated with a commerce degree from the University of Otago and is now able to devote his energies fully to rugby.

Millar, Evans, Allan and Franklin all had strong seasons for the Otago ITM Cup team last winter.

Evans, a lively loose forward who made his provincial debut for Otago against North Harbour in 2011, played 33 games for Otago in the last three years.

He is returning to his home town of Hastings after the Super 15 and has signed a two year contract with Hawkes Bay.

Allan, a loose forward with the Kaikorai club, made his first-class debut in 2012 and has become a key member of the Otago ITM Cup team.

Franklin, a lock with the Southern club, made his debut for Otago in 2011. He is skilled in the lineout and aggressive around the paddock.

Hayden Parker (23), an accurate goal kicker, made his provincial debut for Otago in 2009 and his debut for the Highlanders last year.

He has been given the first run on at first five-eighth.

The Highlanders will be captained by hooker Liam Coltman, who has played four seasons for Otago.

He was in the Highlanders wider training squad in 2012 and gained a full contact last winter.

Buckman made his Super 15 debut for the Hurricanes and Osborne for the Chiefs.

The full Highlanders squad will travel to Queenstown and most of the squad will get game time.

Highlander debutantes in the reserves are Kane Hames (Bay of Plenty), Ged Robinson (Rebels), Malakai Fekitoa (Blues) and Argentinian international prop Matias Diaz.

The game will be played in four 20 minute quarters.

Highlanders injuries are Nasi Manu (pectoral, out for four to six weeks), Shane Christie (knee, four to six weeks), Willie Ripia (calf muscle, one to two weeks) and Brayden Mitchell (shoulder, one to two weeks).
