A perky Liam Squire is ready to play his first game of the season.

However, Ben Smith is unlikely to be seen this week, although he may still yet be seen in a Highlanders jersey.

The Highlanders will take on the Bulls at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Friday night and the season is on the line for both teams.

The Highlanders, coming off a bye, have to win or their season will be over.

Highlanders assistant coach Mark Hammett said he would not say the equation was simple.

"If it was simple we probably would be a bit higher up than where we are. But you've got to keep in mind we are not as low down the table. I think seven points is the difference between fifth and 13th,'' he said.

"So that means a lot of us are desperate...the goal is to win the next two weeks but we have to break that down into how we can do that. We have already been talking about playing longer, going deeper for longer, with or without the ball.''

Desperate does not mean helter-skelter and throwing the game plan out of the window.

"It means playing for longer, being in those spots where you have to go deep into yourself and the guy beside you. I'm 100% confident we can do that. That is how we are training.''

The HIghlanders had the bye last week after coming off two losses in South Africa.

Hammett said players had looked back at the games in Africa with some disappointment. It was the first time the side had come away from a trip to Africa with no points.

"In the most part we were happy with the Lions performance. A lot of stuff we did, not just in game, but in the week leading in, in Africa, was good. The energy was right and so was a lot of the performance.

"But against the Stormers it was just uncharacteristic mistakes that weren't us, so that game was disappointing.''

Hammett said it was hard to put the finger on why the side had played so poorly in Cape Town but was determined to play better this week.

He said fullback and co-captain Smith was tracking well from his hamstring injury, picked up a month ago, but was unlikely to be seen this Friday night.

He was a definite chance to play the Waratahs in Invercargill on June 14, which is the final regular game of the season.

Other injured players Tevita Li and Jackson Hemopo are available and Squire was right to play. Squire had not played all season because of hip and knee injuries and then missed the past three weeks because of personal reasons.

He played one half of club rugby for Taieri on May 25.

"He [Squire] is really excited and is giving a everyone a lot of stick and that normally means he is in a pretty good space.''

Whether he comes off the bench or starts the game will be decided later.

"We know Liam is a game-changer, a guy we all like playing with. He is a guy who brings guys along with him. Whether he starts or comes off the bench we want him to go and play his game.''

The Bulls are coming to the end of a four-week tour and sitting in seventh place after drawing with the Blues last Friday night at Eden Park.
