Otago captain may nab Crusaders spot

Otago captain Sam Anderson-Heather could be in line for a run with the Crusaders on Saturday.

The Dunedin hooker is in camp with the team this week and may feature in its match against the Blues in Christchurch.

It is expected the side will rest All Black hooker Codie Taylor for the match.

With Ben Funnell having been injured since April, that left Andrew Makalio as the side's only available hooker.

While it is likely Makalio will start, Anderson-Heather appears a good chance to claim a spot in the reserves.

The team is to be announced officially at 4pm today.

If the 30-year-old does take the field it will be his second Super Rugby appearance.

His first came for the Highlanders against the Crusaders in 2014.

Anderson-Heather has been a consistent performer for Otago in the Mitre 10 Cup and has 57 caps to his name.

He captained the side last year and will remain as the ''club captain'' this year - although he may not lead the side in every game.

He will also become the second front-rower from the Dunedin club to turn out for the Crusaders this year.

Prop Donald Brighouse has also been with the team.
