A vibrant celebration will showcase high-energy dance and ancient traditions this weekend.

The Dunedin Tamil Society is hosting an event on Saturday, to mark the new year, known as Puthandu or Tamil Puthandu.

The event will include authentic South Indian cuisine alongside classical Carnatic music and graceful Bharatanatyam performances.

Dunedin Tamil Society president Padmini Parthasarathy said the festival is typically celebrated on April 14, marking the first day of the month ‘‘Chithirai’’ in the solar calendar.

For families across the globe, whether originally from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia or Singapore, the festival retains its historical roots tied to both astronomy and classical culture.

While many observe spiritual aspects such as visiting temples or viewing auspicious items first thing in the morning, the upcoming Dunedin function will focus on a secular gathering.

Members of the community often treat the day as an opportunity to emphasise heritage by coming together with family to exchange greetings, wear traditional attire and share meals.

As well as the chance to enjoy South Indian food, the Saturday entertainment will include Carnatic music by Ragalayam — Mini School of Indian Classical Music, Bharatanatyam performances by Naatya School of Indian Dance and cultural showcases including dance, music and Tamil poetry by children and adults in the community.

A DJ mix of Kuthu Dance, a high-energy Tamil folk style, will get people of all ages and backgrounds on their feet. — Allied Media
