Thousands of bright red poppies, symbolising remembrance of those lost in times of war, will be sold in Dunedin this Friday, as the annual Poppy Day fundraising campaign gets under way.

Held across the city each year in the leadup to Anzac Day, Poppy Day raises awareness and funds for the Dunedin RSA Welfare Trust, which provides support for veterans and their families across Otago in times of need.

Trust administrator Sally Turner said local volunteers would sell poppies for a donation at about a dozen sites around Dunedin throughout the day on Friday.

Dunedin’s cadet units would also collect on Saturday at supermarkets and the Otago Farmers Market.

In addition to the collection on Friday and Saturday, there will also be boxes of poppies on shop counters and at supermarket checkouts ahead of Anzac Day next Saturday, April 25.

"People like to have a poppy to wear when they attend Anzac Day services, and to place on war memorials as an act of remembrance," Mrs Turner said.

"So, this is a good time to get some, and to support veterans at the same time."

RSA Otago and Southland district support manager Niall Shepherd said funds raised through the sale of tens of thousands of poppies across the district were a vital contribution to the important ongoing work of the trust.
