Taking a seasonal approach to sport suits Nicole Venz, who dominates netball in winter and tennis in summer.

The 17-year-old Blue Mountain College pupil loves the competition that sport provides, along with the opportunity to meet people.

She has been in the top school netball team since 2007 and for the past two years represented Eastern Southland in the under-17 team.

Younger pupils benefited from her skills, because she coached a year 7 and year 8 team for their weekly competition this year.

Nicole has represented Eastern Southland in tennis since 2005, and last season she played at senior level for the area and was a member of the Southland under-16 team.

She also participates in basketball (as captain of the senior team), athletics and cricket.

She is a member of the 1st XI which will play in the National Secondary Schools Girls' Cricket final this year.

Her cultural side is filled with speech, drama and music.

She has received awards for speech, performed in stage challenge and school productions.

All of this leaves her with ‘‘no spare time'' but has not impacted on her grades as she is the top pupil in her year group.

In 2007 and 2008, she was the school's premier scholar.

Among other things, she has completed a Coastguard Day Skipper qualification along with a gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and taken part in a New Zealand Toastmasters Youth Leadership Programme.

One of her more memorable experiences was going on the Spirit of Adventure. Nicole enjoys ‘‘making the decisions'' and ‘‘meeting different people from everywhere''.

Achievements: Senior basketball team captain; school Blue recipient for tennis, athletics and speech; Premier Scholar for 2007 and 2008.

Role model: No-one.

Hopes for the future: To study marketing and psychology at the University of Otago with a view to getting into market analysis.
