Boat still missing after Taieri Mouth rescued

The three men rescued from their ill-fated fishing trip at Taieri Mouth on Sunday are recovering from their ordeal, but the boat has not fared so well.

Mark Madgwick (36), of North Taieri, said his partly-submerged aluminium boat, C Tic, was believed to be heading north and authorities were on the lookout for it.

The 18-foot Fryan boat was white with a blue line around it and was silver underneath.

"I would love to get it back, otherwise I will be selling my boat trailer," he said.

The planned fishing trip on Sunday was cut short when the boat's engine failed and "we were almost through the last of the breakers, when we got into trouble".

Trying to salvage the boat, rather than send a mayday call, the men became separated from the vessel, he said.

The men were rescued by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter, with John Patterson (64), of Waitoa, spending several days in hospital.

The other man rescued was Lance Patterson, of Dunedin.

"We are all OK now, but no-one wants to go fishing with me."
