Ashley Harris (29), an apprentice at Sims and Blue Painters and Decorators, beat three competitors at the Master Painters New Zealand Awards held in Blenheim earlier this month.
She said winning the award gave her more confidence in herself and her skills.
"I have made some incredible friendships and contacts during the whole process."
The four competitors were each tasked with redecorating a room at Marlborough Hospice over three days.
Because the hospice was still in use, everything had to be done by hand, which Ms Harris said added to the stress.
"We each had four different paints with a range of finishes from gloss to flat depending on the surface and its requirements.
"There was a lot of time pressure. They’ve never done a room at the hospice before — they’ve always done playhouses.
"But this year they decided to give back in a different way to the community."
Sims and Blue Painters and Decorators office and co-ordination manager Nathan Sims said the company could not be more proud.
"From the early days we saw something special in Ashley, from the way she learnt, listened and took things on board.
"Along the way there were a few moments of self-doubt, but that’s where character is built."
The company also won the award for best website.
Operations and projects manager Glenn Sims said the awards could not have come at a better time with the company celebrating its diamond anniversary later this year.
"It’s good recognition for the company. We’re 60 years this year and been through a hundred apprentices so it’s quite nice timing."
