The small town of Luggate is only weeks away from having a brand-new small commercial hub.

After a year of hard work, Wanaka developer Stuart Pinfold is almost ready to welcome the local community into The Green, a collection of food vendors and businesses.

Located across the road from the Luggate Hotel and near the town park, the hub consists of temporary buildings around an open grass area.

The village will include a coffee stand, a food truck, a barber shop and an art collective with one building still available for lease.

The idea for The Green started with Mr Pinfold drawing inspiration from the future visions outlined in the Shaping Our Future report published last year.

The report was written alongside the Luggate Community Association and one of the outcomes acknowledged the need for more shops and services to respond to a growing population.

Mr Pinfold said his vision for The Green was to liven the community up while creating more opportunity.

"I’m trying to respond positively and proactively to that document, which is sort of slowing traffic that runs through this village, creating a bit of a hub and sort of getting a bit more activity happening," he said.

The hub, which Mr Pinfold was hoping to have opened by early September, was only the beginning.

The choice behind having temporary buildings was to get the project up and running to see what the community interest and response would be, then from there it can grow into something more permanent.

"I’ve taken the view of sort of a 10-year version of this," Mr Pinfold said.

"[The temporary buildings] can be taken away and then eventually, when the need arises, we can build some buildings," Mr Pinfold said.

The idea was not only to promote businesses in the area but also to have a community space for activities, especially during the summer.

The Green is built with a pathway to the park and Mr Pinfold is hoping to have more engagement as the summer months approach.
