DairyNZ consulting officer James Lawn, of Dunedin and based at Invermay, is hoping he will be in England for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and in Brazil for the 2016 Olympics.
The 25-year-old is packing his bags and heading overseas later this month.
''I am going to get a job in Australia on a 8500ha grain property for about four months,'' Mr Lawn said.
From there he intends to find work in the United Kingdom.
''I want to find something to add to my knowledge for when I go farming, whether it's artificial breeding, banking or engineering or along those lines.''
He also intends to backpack through Europe and South America before ultimately arriving back home to go dairy farming. Ideally, he will be in the UK for the Rugby World Cup and in South America for the Olympics in 2016 and also wants to ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway (the vodka train) train if possible.
His last day would be October 17, and until then he would be busy preparing topics for his discussion groups to make the transition easier for his yet-to-be-decided replacement.
Originally from a Taranaki dairy farming family, he attended Massey University before starting with DairyNZ in Invercargill in 2012.
After eight months there he was offered the consulting officer role in South Otago.
''I love this job because I get to talk to some of the top farmers in the area.
''This is a great area with great farmers.''
He was always impressed with the amount of things the farmers had to consider when farming, from the cows and grass to farm markets and overseas exports and looking after the environment, and always had been happy to be able to offer advice to help them improve their operations, he said.
He was the Young Farmers Club Otago-Southland regional chairman until earlier this year.
