Optimism in wake of scare

Canterbury milk powder exporter Synlait Milk is optimistic in the wake of the Fonterra contamination scare.

Synlait managing director John Penno was not giving interviews on the matter when Courier Country tried to get in touch with him on Monday. However, the company issued a statement on its position.

''Synlait Milk has reassured its customers that all products it has manufactured are safe,'' the statement said.

''This follows the announcement by the Ministry of Primary Industries that it is working with Fonterra on a food safety issue with a range of products manufactured from whey protein concentrate,'' the statement said.

''Synlait Milk has not used any of the whey protein concentrate WPC80 recalled by Fonterra in the manufacture of its nutritional powder products such as infant formula.''

Food safety and product quality was of paramount importance to the company and it supported the precautionary approach being taken by the ministry and the wider industry, the statement said.

''We expect that this incident will result in some short-term disruption to trade and some additional testing requirements for some markets, but we do not expect this event to impact the growth of our infant formula business beyond the immediate disruptions,'' Dr Penno said in the statement.
