An ill-advised walk across Dunedin's one-way system landed a pensioner in hospital.
More details have emerged about yesterday afternoon’s collision between a truck and a pedestrian, near the intersection of Cumberland St and Andersons Bay Rd.
About 2.20pm, a 76-year-old woman had ‘‘attempted to walk across the five lanes while carrying her groceries’’, Acting Senior Sergeant Iain Notman, of Dunedin, said.
She was hit by a small removal truck.
The woman was taken to hospital by ambulance with leg and shoulder injuries, however it was not thought to be serious, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
A witness told the ODT yesterday the truck was tooting its horn as a female pedestrian crossed the one-way road, but the driver ‘‘couldn't stop in time’’.
The truck appeared to ‘‘swipe’’ the pedestrian, the witness said.
Suspected spinal injury
A man involved in a crash that blocked traffic on Dunedin’s Southern Motorway has sustained a suspected spinal cord injury, police say.
Acting Snr Sgt Notman said police were called to the single-vehicle crash, about 3pm on Wednesday.
A 43-year-old man was driving southbound, near Fairfield, when he lost control and crashed into the motorway barrier.
The vehicle was towing a trailer, which detached and travelled up to 50m down the motorway, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
Firefighters cut the man from the vehicle and was flown to Christchurch Hospital with a suspected spinal cord injury.
No other people were involved in the crash, Acting Snr Sgt Notman said.
The crash left traffic backed up on the motorway for most of Wednesday afternoon, reopening about 5.30pm.
