Ploughman returns from Sweden

"Awesome" is how Clinton ploughman Scott McKenzie describes his experience of competing at the world ploughing championships in Sweden.

Mr McKenzie, who returned home recently, finished 17th overall in the conventional class. His team-mate Malcolm Taylor, from Putaruru, was fifth overall in the reversible division.

Mr McKenzie was "fairly happy" with his ploughing.

The stubble ground was in in good condition but the grass ploughing was a "little bit tougher".

The New Zealand team attracted media interest, largely because Mr Taylor brought his tractor and plough with him, and also because Bruce Redmond, of Methven, who won the 2010 world ploughing championship title, attended.

Mr McKenzie managed to do a little sightseeing and noticed a lot of differences between Swedish and New Zealand farming.

Most of the livestock was housed indoors and there were no fences.

Temperatures varied between about 20degC and zero, he said, laughing, and there was even snow one day.

On his way home, Mr McKenzie stopped in Canada and spent 10 days with farmers in Northern Alberta for whom he used to work, and helped them get finish their seeding.

Although he missed a lot of ploughing matches while he was away, he was back ploughing at the weekend, at Riversdale and West Otago. This weekend he will be ploughing at Winton.
