Mr Dickie, a member of the Tuapeka West Collie Club, and 8-year-old Tweed, won the New Zealand long head title, scoring 97 in their first run and 95 in the second.
They were also second in the North Island championship, behind Eion Herbert and Haig, from Marlborough.
Tweed, who has been top dog in the Otago centre for several years, was second in the North Island championship last year.
Mr Dickie, a seasoned campaigner who has been trialling for more than 30 years, said nerves were ''not much of an issue''. He previously won a New Zealand title in the straight hunt at the 2006 championships at Omarama with Ben, and he has won five island titles.
Tweed was sired by Neville Hore's Moss, out of Roger Tweed's bitch Tess. There were four dogs in that litter which had all been in either island or New Zealand finals.
Mr Dickie described Tweed as ''just a damned good all-round dog'' who was an ''exceptional'' work dog at home on the farm.
''He's probably the ultimate type of dog to have,'' he said.
He has been named in the test team to compete against Australia in Ashburton in early November. The team, which will be captained by Stuart Millar, from Canterbury, also includes North Islanders Murray Child and Steve Murphy, with Mark Copland (Mid Canterbury), as reserve.
It was Mr Dickie's second time in the New Zealand team and it was a strong team, he said.
Hakataramea Valley farmer Aaron Bell and Molly - last year's New Zealand straight hunt champions - were third in the event this year, while Jock Meehan and Molly, from Wanaka, were seventh.
