The week-long fifth annual Student Development Society 2014 International Business Case Competition was held in Queenstown, with 12 teams going head-to-head in three different competition events.
The winning team was William McVeagh (finance), Jonny Martin (finance, management and tourism), Scott Malpas (marketing and entrepreneurship), and Blair Shepherd (law, philosophy, politics, economics).
There were also teams from the University of Auckland, AUT, University of Waikato, Victoria University and the University of Canterbury, along with representatives from universities in Canada, the United States, Australia, Canada, Norway and Singapore.
The winning team was coached by Dr John Guthrie, a senior lecturer in marketing.
Their strategy in the final was ''straightforward'' - ''and the judges liked it'', Dr Guthrie said.
The competition was one a lot of overseas universities wanted to attend. It was the first time the University of Otago had won it and it was good for the university's brand, and also good for the students.
It was ''real-life situations'' and it was also bringing together all the disciplines, which did not happen often, and working as a team, he said.
At the end of the event, there were some job offers made and job interviews conducted, which was ''really cool''.
''I've never seen that before,'' Dr Guthrie said.
