Access to properties has been delayed longer than anticipated near the intersection of Inglis St and Gordon Rd in Mosgiel due to ongoing major roadworks.
Contractor Downer continues to work on Gordon Rd and State Highway 87 road repairs under contract to the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).
NZTA coastal Otago network manager Chris Harris said the delay at the Inglis St intersection occurred after pre-work testing showed the ground was softer than expected, which meant extra reinforcement was needed on the road foundation.
"Unfortunately, this has meant access to properties in this area was delayed longer than we wanted, and we want to say thank you to those property owners and businesses for their patience,'' he said.
Once work is finished on the Inglis St intersection area, work will begin on the final surface layer for the whole road.
This phase was likely to begin on Friday and would take up to a week to complete, Mr Harris said.
A final layer of asphalt needed to be laid for the whole area and it was important to do this with a minimum of joins. This would provide the best longevity for the road surface and improved ride quality for motorists.
The final surface layer work would start at Nellies on the northbound lanes and would continue through to Cargill St, Mr Harris said.
With the original asphalt surface needing to be lifted and new paving put down, all access-ways on Gordon Rd would be affected from time to time.
The work would also result in the short-term closure of side streets along the road.
