Dunedin Hospital’s Dispensary cafe is continuing to sell coffee to thirsty health workers during the Level 4 lockdown but with strict operating guidelines, the Southern District Health Board says.

Otago Daily Times readers contacted the newspaper yesterday asking why the cafe was still functioning when every other cafe, bar and restaurant in the city had been ordered to shut.

An SDHB spokeswoman said the decision to keep the cafe open was made with staff welfare in mind.

It was only open to hospital staff, orders had to be phoned through and picked up at a designated time.

‘‘There must be one person only at the counter at any given time for pick ups, and anyone waiting will need to be 2m from the person at the counter.’’

The cafe would not accept cash payments, and was asking customers to use paywave.

I would be more than happy for that cafe to remain open strictly for health workers. It sure sounds like the operating conditions are going to protect all the customers and staff.
