Joshua Frazer (6) has never had his hair cut before, but his long locks are to be chopped by All Black halfback Aaron Smith.
The Winton youngster has so far raised more than $5000 for the Cancer Society.
The choice of charity was all his. He recently lost a close neighbour to cancer, and he played rugby at Midlands, for the same club as cancer care advocate Blair Vining.
His dad, Southland district councillor Darren Frazer, explained.
‘‘He was starting to think, ‘Yeah, I want a haircut’, and I think his mum was brushing his hair too vigorously.’’
As a father, he loved the fact his son was thinking of others and showing empathy.
Joshua’s fundraising page gave some background: ‘‘Our neighbour Bernie died from cancer. She was a great neighbour, and we saw her almost every day out in her garden. I miss her.’’
He said donations so far had been from family and friends, but some were from people he did not know.
‘‘My teachers are saying, ‘Great job’.’’
There is no set date for the haircut but Smith is likely to be playing overseas for the next three months as the All Blacks head offshore.
Joshua’s fundraiser is on the Cancer Society website.
