Royal Firefly reviews techno toy

Our intrepid 8 year old reviewer gives the lowdown on a new toy designed to bring reading alive for children.

LeapFrog Tag

Review by Rosa Flaherty (8)

Leapfrog Tag is a new toy. It is a toy that you and your child (or children) will enjoy. It is easy to use.

The first thing me and my brother did was: we took the book and pen out of the box.

Then we opened the book and started to listen to the story. (It was called Ozzie and Mack.)

You will think it's funny that I said I took a pen out of the box but the pen has a speaker and some buttons that help you listen to the story.

This toy is for 4-8-year-old children.

I am 8 years old and I have a younger brother. He is 7 years old.

There is one year and three days between me and my brother.

I think me and my brother liked the toy equally but I think I enjoyed doing the activities more than my brother.

I found it exciting to go online and download a story called Kung Fu Panda: Po's tasty training.

I think that I was too old for the book and it was quite easy to read, but it was fun to do the activities.

My favourite activity was at the front of the book.

This is how you play it: First you touch a green button with a white star on it with the pen.

Then you follow the instructions, pointing the pen at the place on the page where it says, and the system makes up a nickname for you.

My nickname was Royal Firefly.

Rosa Flaherty is a year 4 pupil at Sacred Heart School in Dunedin.

What: LeapFrog Tag is marketed a as revolutionary reading system. By pointing the electronic tag reader at the page, children have the book read to them, while interactive games test their comprehension.

How it works: A small infrared camera at the tip of the reading stylus "reads" words, letter and symbols out loud.
