Sarita Aldred, of Dunedin, is the New Zealand Red Cross national youth representative.

What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

It would have to be my favourite pair of boots. I had been saving up for them for ages. Unknown to me, my partner had called ahead and bought them the day I went in. The poor girl behind the counter had to deal with my tears when I realised she was serious and I could walk out of the store without spending a cent.

What smell do you find irresistible?

I think it’s a tie; grass after rain and my grandma’s baking. Living on a farm, there is nothing better than the smell after a rain shower and everything is fresh and peaceful. Grandma’s baking day was always Saturday and the scent of opening the door to something fresh out of the oven will stay with me forever.

What is your least favourite thing about humanity?

Our reliance on technology. It’s not very often you can go out for dinner or to the movies and not see at least one person either checking their phone constantly or ignoring the person they are out with. I can’t say I am completely tech free but sometimes it’s nice to recognise the world around you by stepping away.

What is one strong childhood memory?

Growing up we had a neighbour who would grow strawberries. One of my earliest memories is of sneaking down the garden to collect the bright red fruit only to hear the neighbour coming and hiding. He was never angry. As I got older, I found out he only grew the strawberries so I could collect them.

You are a new addition to the crayon box, what colour are you and why?

I think I would be a combination of red and purple, maybe even something metallic. I am a huge colour person who at any given opportunity will use post-its, markers and glitter. Of course, this means I’ve got to be something bright and different but normal too.
