Coming from a large theatrical family, it is no wonder Katarina Schwarz became involved in the performing arts.

From ballet to modern dance, jazz and drama, the 18-year-old does it all.

She has completed grade six from the Royal Academy of Dance in ballet and attended the New Zealand School of Dance winter school in Wellington last year.

Katarina also turned her hand to choreography with school production The Groovy Show last year and the Stage Challenge this year.

Her love of Shakespeare brought about a highlight of her life when she performed one of his plays for the first time at age 13.

‘‘I'm a big Shakespeare fan,'' she said.

Passion for the playwright made her the driving force behind the school entry in the Sheila Winn Shakespeare Festival last year.

Another highlight for Katarina was travelling to Japan in her summer holidays.

Staying in Sapporo for two months, she was amazed by how ‘‘completely different'' it was.

Debating is another of her strong points as she often leads the senior school team and often receives a best speaker award.

One of her proudest moments was coming third at the Otago Secondary Schools Debating Competition.

She was ‘‘moving up in the competition'' after not doing so well last year, she said.

Achievements: Ballet grade six from Royal Academy of Dance; Thomson Award for Dance recipient 2008; Upper Clutha under16 football team representative; Otago Southland Secondary Debating Championships competitor; member of winning Model United Nations Assembly team in 2008; NCEA level 2 endorsed with excellence; year 12 High Achievement award 2008; A netball team, 2009; A basketball team, 2009.

Role model: Both her dance teachers-her mother who was an ‘‘amazing dancer'' and Jenny Kjelgaard for her passion and talent for dance.

Hopes for the future: To study towards a double degree in law and the arts, probably majoring in theatre, at the University of Otago.
